Easy to Make Melon-Infused Vodka

Many cocktails call for flavor-infused alcohol. Rather than purchasing flavored liquor for one recipe, make your own. This recipe for watermelon-flavored vodka only takes five minutes to prepare. You can buy one bottle of plain vodka, use a portion to make a small batch of watermelon vodka, and then use the other half for other purposes. (Click here to go to the Melon Mule recipe that uses this vodka.)

Two Ingredients for Melon-Infused Vodka

This recipe uses only two ingredients to make watermelon-flavored vodka: watermelon and plain vodka. Always use a good quality vodka for the best results. However, this recipe will not use an entire bottle, so plenty will be left for other purposes. In addition, you can use other melons, such as cantaloupe or honeydew, to make melon-flavored vodka.

Use a Mason Jar for Melon-Infused Vodka

Making watermelon-flavored vodka is a delightful endeavor that’s perfect for summer gatherings. Start by selecting a ripe, sweet watermelon and cutting it into small cubes. Place them in a clean, airtight jar such as a Mason or canning jar. The jar size depends on how much vodka you want to infuse. If you are having a party and need a lot of vodka, use large glass jars. Or, if you need a small amount of flavored vodka, use a pint or a small jar.

Pour a good-quality vodka over the watermelon, filling the glass jar to the lid threads. The melon will float, which is okay because the lid will hold it in the vodka.

Wait Seven Days

Add the lid to the jar, seal tightly, and place it into the refrigerator, giving it a gentle shake every couple of days to mix the flavors. After seven days in the fridge, remove the melon and strain it through a cheesecloth, coffee filter, or fine-mesh sieve to filter out any melon bits. Enjoy!

Notes

Yield

This recipe makes about 1 cup of melon vodka. You can also use a quart jar to double the amount. Cut up enough watermelon to fill your container, and then add vodka.

Watch for Mold or an Unpleasant Smell

As with all homemade items, do not use the vodka if a mold appears on the watermelon or if it develops an unpleasant smell. After straining any melon bits, the final product should be light pink/blush to clear color.

Conversion to Milliliters

A sixteen-ounce pint jar is approximately 500 ml.
