Try folding tuxedo napkins to add a charming and sophisticated touch to a celebration table! You can create this delightful design with just a few simple steps and top it off with a black bowtie.
Creating Tuxedo Napkins
Using square napkins approximately 20 inches x 20 inches (50.8 cm) is essential for making elegant tuxedo napkins. For a visual, click here for the New Year’s Eve post, where I showcased these charming napkins.
Step 1: Begin with a Triangle Fold
Start by folding the napkin over into a triangle shape.
Step 2: Create the Collar
Next, make a 1 1/2 inch (3.81 cm) fold across the long side of the napkin. To hold the fold in place while you work, you can use a glass as a weight (shown below).
Step 3: Flip the Napkin
With the collar fold held steady, flip the napkin over.
Step 4: Shape the Tuxedo Napkins
Fold over the right corner at an angle, as illustrated in the accompanying picture. Then, repeat the process with the left corner to complete the right side of the tuxedo.
Step 5: Secure and Fold the Sides
While keeping all the folds in place, turn the napkin over once more. Then, fold in the right side at an angle, followed by the left side of the napkin.
Step 6: Tuck and Flip
Flip up the bottom of the napkin and tuck the tail under the collar. Flip the napkin over, and you have your tuxedo shape.
Step 7: Create the Bow Ties for Tuxedo Napkins
Next, incorporate a bow tie. There are various methods to create bow ties, but I opted for a wired ribbon that stands out. Begin by cutting a piece of ribbon that measures approximately 9 inches in length.
Step 8: Form the Bow Tie
Locate the center of the ribbon and fold the right side slightly past the midpoint. Then, fold the left side and overlap it with the previously folded right side.
Step 9: Finish the Bow Tie
Gather the center of the bow tie by pinching it together, then secure it with a small, thin ribbon or a wired tie. If you’re using a ribbon, wrap it snugly around the middle of the bow two or three times, then trim it, ensuring the seam is hidden at the back. Use a hot glue gun to secure the ribbon on the backside. For a wired tie, simply fold the tails behind the bow tie.
Step 10: Place the Bow Ties on the Tuxedo Napkins
Set the bow ties on top of the napkins. I chose not to attach them so guests can easily remove them when they use the napkins.
Your elegant tuxedo napkins are ready to impress at your event! Enjoy the festive touch they bring to your table setting.
