griddle or frying pan (cast iron frying pan preferred)
2 spatulas for flipping burgers
Ingredients
1poundhamburger
1largesweet onion
salt
pepper
3slicescheese
6Hawaiian rolls (original)
1tablespoonbutter
Instructions
Divide out 6 Hawaiian rolls. Slice them horizontally to make a top and bottom. Separate all the pieces. You should have 6 tops and 6 bottoms. Set aside.
Cut the onion into extra thin slices. Set aside.
Make 6 balls out of the hamburger. Season with salt and pepper.
Heat the griddle or frying pan on high heat until hot.
Add the burger balls and smash them flat with a spatula, making them thinner around the edges. Divide the onions and place them on top of each burger.
Cook for 2-5 minutes until the burgers are crispy around the edges. Use 2 spatulas to flip each burger, one to flip, and one to hold the onions in place. Cut the cheese and place a piece on the top of each burger.
Melt the butter on the side of the griddle (or in a separate frying pan) and toast the inside of each Hawaiian roll. Then, place a bottom roll on each burger as they cook. Ensure that only the inside of a roll is against the cheese in case it sticks. Place top rolls on top of bottom rolls (to have a place to set them while they steam). Cover with a lid to let the rolls steam and soften. You can cover them with aluminum foil if you don't have a lid. Cook until the burgers are 160 degrees F. in the thickest part.
Remove the top roll half from the sliders. Then, take the burgers off the heat, flip them, and add a roll to the bottom. Serve.
