5cupsRice Krispies cereal(or another crispy rice cereal)
extra butter for buttering the pan
confectioners' sugar (optional)
Instructions
Use extra butter to coat the bottom and sides of a 9 x 13-inch pan. Set aside.
Melt the butter on low heat in an extra-large pot. Add the marshmallows and stir until they are almost melted. Turn off the heat and continue stirring until the marshmallows are completely melted. Add the vanilla and salt. Stir.
Add the Nutella and stir until thoroughly mixed. Add the cereal and stir until it is coated with the Nutella mixture.
Place the mixture into the buttered pan. Place waxed or parchment paper on top and press the cereal mixture until evenly spread in the pan. Cool and cut into squares. Sprinkle with confectioners' sugar if desired.
Notes
Troubleshooting
The most common complaint with crispy bars is that they turn out too hard. This usually happens because the heat was too high when melting the butter and marshmallows. Be sure to use low heat and remove the mixture (from the heat) before all the marshmallows are melted. Then, stir until all the marshmallows are melted.
Nutella
You can enhance the flavor of these bars by adding more hazelnut spread for a more intense taste. Feel free to include up to a cup of Nutella. Additionally, melting a little Nutella in the microwave and drizzling it over the finished bars creates a delicious finishing touch.
Substitution
You may substitute large marshmallows for miniature marshmallows. Use the same amount of ounces listed in the recipe. You can also cut them into two pieces to make them melt faster.
Cut Shapes with a Cookie Cutter
Cut shapes such as footballs or hearts with a cookie cutter while the mixture is still warm. Press the mixture into the 9 x 13-inch pan. Then, use a 2 or 3-inch cookie cutter to cut shapes. When you have cut as many shapes as possible, press together any leftover mixture, flatten, and repeat cutting shapes.
