Equipment

  • Instant Pot (or another pressure cooker)

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds fresh green beans
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  • Wash the green beans. Break off the ends and remove any strings. Snap them in two or leave them whole if you prefer.
  • Place the green beans into the Instant Pot. Add the water, olive oil, salt, and pepper.
  • Set the vent spout to closed.
  • Set the Instant Pot to Pressure Cook. Set the timer for 15 minutes. (See Note below for additional times.)
  • When finished, immediately turn the vent spout to venting and release all the pressure. Once all pressure is released, open the cooker and add extra salt and pepper if needed. Serve immediately.

Notes

Modify the Cooking Time

If you prefer firmer beans after cooking, reduce the cooking time by 5 minutes. For softer beans, add 5 minutes to the time. If you prefer crispy beans, I recommend a different cooking method than pressure cooking. Instead, click here for How to Make Sauteed Green Beans.

Add Other Flavors

  1. Add other flavors to these beans to change them up. Here are some ideas to get started.
    1. Substitute chicken broth for the water to add extra flavor. To keep them vegetarian, substitute vegetable broth.
    2. To add bacon flavor: Cook strips of bacon separately until crispy. Use bacon renderings in place of olive oil. After cooking the beans, chop the cooked bacon and sprinkle it over them just before serving.
    3. If you love garlic, add minced garlic to the beans along with oil, water, salt, and pepper before sealing and cooking.
    4. For a richer taste, substitute 1 tablespoon of butter for olive oil, then add it to the pot along with the other ingredients before cooking.
