Cinnamon Apple Moscow Mule

Fall Cocktail

These Moscow Mules are fizzy and have the obligatory lime juice–two things you expect in a mule. What turns them into a fall drink is apple cider and a secret ingredient to enhance the apple cider flavor. Perfect for fall entertaining, these mules are easy to assemble, and your guests will love them!

Make Your Own Apple-Flavored Vodka

These mules have apple-flavored vodka in them. You can purchase apple vodka or just make your own with plain vodka. It is unbelievably easy to do and has only three ingredients–vodka, apples, and cinnamon. To infuse flavor into vodka, you will need to let it sit for about a week. So, if you plan to make cocktails on the weekend, start the infusion process the weekend before. Click here to go to the Cinnamon-Apple Infused Vodka recipe.

Secret Ingredient

This recipe has a secret ingredient in it to enhance the apple cider flavor. The secret: use an apple cider drink mix (shown below). There are other brands besides the one I show below. However, make sure you use an apple cider drink mix and not a mulled cider mix. Many mulled cider mixes do not have any apple flavor in them. For this recipe, you will want the apple flavor!

Use Fresh Apple and Limes to Garnish

I think the most visually-appetizing thing about this recipe is the fresh fruit. Use small to medium-sized apples so you can cut large slices in the mugs (as shown below). Cut limes into wedges. Be sure to squeeze some of the lime juice all over the apple slices to prevent them from turning brown. Put a couple of apple slices and a lime wedge into the drinks. Then add a sprig or two of greenery. I used a sprig of basil and mint for these drinks.

I like this drink as a mocktail without the alcohol. It has ginger beer in it, which sounds alcoholic but is not. I prefer to use Barritt’s Ginger Beer for the best taste. However, Fever-Tree Ginger Ale works well too. If you have a brand you like to use, it will also work in this recipe. If you make mocktails, be sure to use the apple, lime, and greenery garnish in them just like you do for the cocktails. You can place a stick of cinnamon in the mug too.

Copper Mugs

For the best taste, use copper mugs for these mules. They become very chilled with the crushed ice and will stay that way for a while. You could also use an insulated mug if you don’t have copper mugs. Either way, enjoy!

  1. Fill a copper Moscow mule mug half full with coarsely crushed ice.
  2. In a drink shaker or a jar fitted with a lid, place the cider, instant cider drink mix, juice from 1/2 of the lime, and vodka. Shake to mix. (If you don't have a shaker, measure the ingredients in a measuring cup and stir to dissolve the drink mix.
  3. Pour the mixture over the crushed ice into the mug. Then pour ginger ale to fill up the copper mug. Stir to mix.
  4. Cut the leftover lime into two wedges. Place the first piece into the drink. Then squeeze the other lime wedge over the apple slices to keep them from turning brown. Add the apples to the cocktail. Place one or two sprigs of greenery into the mug to garnish. Serve immediately.
Recipe Notes

To make a mocktail, omit the vodka.  Barritt's Ginger Beer is non-alcoholic.
